Hearings on Alito Nomination Set to Begin on Monday
Judge Samuel AlitoThe U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee has scheduled hearings beginning on Monday, January 9, at 11 a.m. (Central Standard Time) to consider the nomination of  Judge Samuel Alito, Jr. for the U.S. Supreme Court. Live webcast of the hearings will be available at C-SPAN.org. Judge Alito has served as a judge on the federal Third Circuit Court of Appeals since 1990. The American Bar Association recently gave Judge Alito a "well qualified" rating, its highest.

Partial-Birth Abortion Returns to the U.S. Supreme Court
Front of Supreme Court BuildingOn Friday, January 6, 2006, the U.S. Supreme Court considered whether to review a lower-court's ruling to block enforcement of the federal Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act, which President Bush signed into law on November 5, 2003. Partial-birth Attorney General Greg Abbottabortion is a gruesome method used late in pregnancy in which the abortionist partially delivers a live unborn child, with usually only the head remaining in the birth canal, kills the child, and then completes the removal of the baby. The lower court struck down the pro-life law, ruling that Roe v. Wade prevents the ban on partial-birth abortionFor an excellent summary of the issues before the Court from National Right to Life, click here. The Supreme Court is expected to announce its decision on Monday, January 9, on whether to accept the case.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott filed a friend-of-the-court brief in support of the federal ban on partial-birth abortions. Abbott filed the brief on behalf of Texas and 14 other states. For a copy, click here.

National Poll Shows Hispanics Are Pro-Life, Support Parental Consent for Abortion
A recent poll confirmed that Hispanics in America are predominantly pro-life and support parental consent before abortions can be performed on underage girls. The poll, released by the Latino Coalition, a Washington-based organization, sampled 1,000 adult Hispanics between December 10-13, 2005, with a +/-3.1% error margin. According to the poll, 57% of  Hispanics identify themselves as "pro-life" while only 27% describe themselves as "pro-choice" (15% didn't know or refused to answer). On this issue of parent consent for abortion, the margin of support was 57% to 37% (8% didn't know or refused to answer).

In the November, 2004, presidential election, President Bush carried nearly 60% of Texas Hispanic voters compared to 43% four years before. Pro-abortion U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes (D-El Paso) attributed the president's strong showing among Hispanics to effective campaigning. "One of the things they really pushed was the abortion issue," he told the El Paso Times.
