Is Obama's abortion policy racist?
TAL's Summer/Fall Life Matters newsletter will be arriving in mailboxes across Texas soon. You can read an advance copy right now by clicking -HERE-. One of the issues addressed is whether Obama's policy of tax-funded abortion on demand is racist in the column below:

Abortion and racism

by Joe Pojman, Ph.D.
Executive Director, Texas Alliance for Life

Racism is an insidious evil, and most Americans would agree that we must do all we can to stamp it out. Many, however, are unaware that abortion, a monstrous and violent evil in itself, has had a brutal racial effect that has devastated the black population in this nation.

Consider the facts: Babies conceived by black women are aborted at a much higher rate than those conceived by white women. While only 13 percent of American women are black, 35 percent of all abortions are performed on black women.

Here in Texas, 29 percent of unborn babies of black women die from abortion compared to 16 percent of babies of white women. Nationally, it's even worse. Nearly as many babies of black mothers die from abortion as are born alive.

The reasons for these figures are varied, but one thing is certain: Abortion is not simply a social or moral issue, it is also a racial issue.

What does this mean for the upcoming presidential election? If fighting racism and its lingering effects is important to you, consider this: Sens. Obama and Biden strongly support abortion on demand as a national policy and want to change the law that has been in place for nearly three decades that prevents federal tax funding for elective abortions. If they are successful, our tax dollars will be used to destroy thousands of unborn babies each year and -- based on the statistics above -- further the racial effects of abortion.

It is an unfortunate fact that serious problems of crime and poverty persist in many black communities. How many more agents for true change -- people the caliber of Martin Luther King Jr. -- will die from tax-funded abortions if Obama and Biden control the Whitehouse?

If we Americans love our children, no matter their race, we must consider the effects of Obama and Biden's pro-abortion policies when we vote in the upcoming election.

National Life Chain Sunday, October 5, 2 to 3 p.m.
A peaceful, prayerful, pro-life, public witness of the Christian community standing together for the sanctity of human life is coming to the U.S. and Canada, linking 1,400 towns.

Professionally printed signs will be provided at Life Chain locations found on

Lawn chairs, strollers, umbrellas, water -- all are welcome at this ecumenical event.
Since an unborn baby is killed every 20-23 seconds in the U.S., your friends and family are being affected. Every year coordinators hear about young women who have decided not to have an abortion after seeing the signs.

The Choose Life license plate in Texas: The momentum is growing!
Although Texas has more than 130 specialty license plates, our state does not yet have the Choose Life plate. The Texas Legislature must pass a law to create the Choose Life license plate when it meets in January. The Choose Life license plate in Texas will promote adoption. Of the $30 fee for the plate, $8 will cover Texas Department of Transportation's production costs and $22 will be available for pro-life pregnancy resource centers, Gabriel Projects, and maternity homes that assist pregnant women considering adoption.

You can help! Join  4,000+ others and sign the "Petition for Choose Life License Plates"! Sign it online and forward it to friends. (Download an 8.5x14" hard copy.)
